Morae Global hosted a roundtable discussion entitled “The Law Department as a Business Enabler” on March 12th at Jones Lang LaSalle’s Americas headquarters in Chicago. The executive roundtable focused on how to become a business enabler through the right people, process and systems. Attendees included associate general counsel and legal operations professionals from 13 companies including Microsoft, TransUnion, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Exelon and Ryan Specialty Group.
Moderated by Morae Global Managing Director Heidi Rudolph, the panel included Morae Global Director John Mielitz and featured peer-to-peer networking and an interactive dialogue spotlighting shared experiences, opportunities for improvement and success stories about how senior in-house counsel and legal operations leaders work to advance their corporate law department missions.
“It was widely agreed that the law department’s goals should align with the business unit’s stated goals and reflect the company’s culture,” says Mielitz. “There was also agreement on the importance of building trust with the business functions and creating an ‘internal brand’ for the law department.”
Participants emphasized the importance of maintaining a talented, motivated legal team. Key takeaways include:
- Have a defined training and mentoring program.
- Ensure that legal staff has a solid understanding of the business.
- Aside from the requisite legal skills, in-house staff should also demonstrate soft skills that include aptitude for embracing change, coachability and intellectual curiosity.
Advancements in legal technology continue, and the discussion also focused on their impact on today’s law departments. Participants agreed that embracing and effectively utilizing technology should be a vital component of a department’s holistic approach to information governance, risk control, compliance and issue response. The evolution of cloud-based products such as Microsoft’s Office 365 further highlighted the need for flexibility and staying informed on current and developing technologies.
The final topic covered was how the law department can create value for their internal (business unit) clients. The critical component discussed was the use of metrics to demonstrate that value. “It is important to deliver improvements in spend, cycle times, efficiencies and other metrics,” Mielitz explains. “But the true measure of success still lies within delivering the best business outcomes for the organization.”
